Chinese games are taking an increasingly important spot on the world stage. According to data from Sensor Tower, in December 2023, 37 Chinese game developers were shortlisted on the Top 100 revenue list, surpassing countries like the US, Japan, and South Korea. Chinese games are becoming a global sensation.
Reports show that 84% of Chinese gaming companies draw inspiration from traditional Chinese characters in game character design, while 98% of companies incorporate elements of traditional Chinese culture in game environments and element designs. From classic works such as Journey to the West and Romance of the Three Kingdoms to Chinese folk stories, mythological legends, poetry, and other literary genres, game developers are incorporating a wide range of cultural content into products, adding depth and variety to the gaming experience.
At TGA 2023, a Chinese game called Black Myth: Wukong was announced with main characters drawn from classical Chinese literature. The game is a 3A-level game and has been generating a lot of excitement among players on Steam’s ‘Top Wishlists’, where it has climbed to the second position. Another Chinese game, Genshin Impact, has been enjoying great success since its release in 2020. Traditional Chinese cultural elements can be found all over Genshin Impact, including in its storyline, characters, environments, music, and events. Other Chinese games that feature traditional cultural elements include Moonlight Blade and The Everlasting Regret. Chinese game developers have been exploring ways to integrate traditional culture into their games, which has resulted in many successful innovative practices.
By blending traditional Chinese culture seamlessly into games, Chinese games enable global players to explore and understand rich Chinese history, geography, humanities, and even philosophical culture. This infusion breathes life and unique charm into Chinese games, making them more vibrant and captivating.
The progress made thus far is just the start of the Chinese games' global journey. Although they are already leading in terms of profitability, quality, and cultural influence, there is still a lot of room for growth. The captivating appeal that China's exceptional traditional culture brings to the table will continue to help Chinese games thrive in the global market.
