Days ago, data.ai released a new annual report about the key data and trends of the global mobile game market in 2022.
The report indicates that in 2022, global mobile game downloads were approximately 89.74 billion times, with an increase of 6.67 billion times compared to data from 2021. However, the global mobile game market revenue was approximately $110 billion in 2022, with a decrease of 5% in revenue.
Data.ai pointed out that although the overall revenue of the global mobile game market declined slightly in 2022, many best-selling products still reached new peaks. For example, during the second season, the cumulative turnover of the open-world RPG mobile game "Genshin Impact" easily exceeded 3 billion US dollars.
Seen from the trend of downloads over the years, customers’ interest in mobile games is still growing. Throughout 2022, global players downloaded mobile games at an average of 1 billion times per week, play for approximately 6.4 billion hours per week, and consume $1.6 billion.
The report also mentioned such an interesting trend: in 2022, no matter in terms of downloads or revenue, old games did not lose to new games that were launched that year. Among all the mobile games that entered the top 1,000 download list in the United States, the average number of downloads of old games reached 2.5 million, while that of new games was only 2.1 million.
Regional Analysis: In terms of mobile game downloads, developing markets further extended their lead.
In the mobile game market where the F2P model prevails, countries such as India, Brazil, and Indonesia have huge opportunities. According to statistics from data.ai, throughout 2022, India was far ahead in terms of mobile game downloads: in Google Play store alone, Indian players downloaded 9.5 billion times last year.
But on the iOS platform, the United States is still the country with the most game downloads by players last year, about 2.2 billion times. China ranks second in this statistic (1.4 billion).
Regional analysis: Japanese and South Korean mobile game players have the highest per capital spending.
In terms of mobile game revenue, the Asia-Pacific continues to be the top regional market in the world, acclaiming for more than 51% of the market share, and data from 2022 is higher than that from 2021(48%). According to the report, on the iOS platform, Japan is the country with the highest per capital game consumption of players: in 2022, the average monthly expenditure of Japanese players in iOS games will reach 10.30 US dollars. South Korea ranks second in the report.
However, on Google Play store, South Korean players have the highest average monthly game spending in 2022, reaching $11.20.
Category analysis: Strategy and RPG games gained highest revenue
From a revenue point of view, 4X March Battle (Strategy), MMORPG, Battle Royale (RPG) and Slot games are leading in mobile game categories. In 2022, the global revenue of 4X marching battle (strategy) mobile games will exceed 9 billion US dollars, accounting for about 11.3% of the total revenue of the mobile game market-although the downloads of games in this category account for less than 1%.
